3. Media Center Studio
Media Center Studio blossomed from the same genius that was formerly responsible for Vista Media Center’s Menu Mender except that MC Studio does so much more. Media Center Studio tackles some of the most difficult problems in customizing Windows 7 Media Center such as creating entire themes and completely reorganizing the start menu. Formerly adjusting the location of the default menu strip items required several programs and a degree in astrophysics. That’s not even to mention adding additional items to the built-in menu strips which was twice as difficult. Now doing these tasks is a simple matter of launching Media Center Studio and making some quick adjustments. Now any user can arrange their start menu in any manner they like but that’s not all.
All this and Media Center Studio’s ability to create entire themes to alter the basic appearance of Media Center hasn’t even been mentioned yet. Though not as paramount a task as rearranging hardcoded menu items it was still a time consuming affair that has been made somewhat simpler with Media Center Studio. Several of the options provided by MC Studio weren’t really explored prior to the program coming out such as changing fonts and font colors.
Not only has Media Center Studio opened up the ability to customize and create a unique Media Center setup for each user but the MCT theme format allows users to create and redistribute theme packages in a relatively easy to use format. Compared with the various patch and system file replacing techniques used previously it has made the distribution of complete themes relatively simple. Just check out Hack7MC’s first Media Center Theme Pack which includes five themes available for Media Center Studio.
4. Media Browser
There are a number of third party plugins devoted to bringing your movie library to Windows Media Center. Previous versions of Media Center, in Vista and XP, lacked a decent movie library solution and such plugins were a necessity. Now that Windows 7 includes a basic movie library out of the box these plugins provide premium features and looks. Media Browser has quickly become one of the most popular move library plugins available for the Windows 7 Media Center. In sheer appearance it’s hard to beat Media Browser. Not only does this plugin sport looks but it also has a relatively good metadata retrieval tool built-in and does a much better job of displaying it than the built-in option. Media Browser offers you a plethora of options for displaying movie collections even allowing for multiple folders unlike the native library.
Not only does Media Browser offer the best in displaying a movie collection but it also allows the user to set things like parental limitations on the collection which can be a premium feature with young ones in the house. Parental controls being just one feature among many available in the background of this plugin including external player capability, extender transcoding, watched status indicators, weather and even a fairly new custom plugin system.
The relatively recent addition of a built-in plugin system of it’s own has bloomed into a healthy batch of additions to Media Browser. Inside the plugin system you’ll find trailer and music additions as well as totally new themes which allow for even more customization of the plugin’s appearance. The extraordinary number of options available to customize the appearance of Media Browser alone makes the plugin a more than worthy replacement for the built in movie library. It’s no wonder this is one of the most popular plugins available for Windows 7 Media Center.
