Hacking Windows 7 Media Center

Media Center Theme Pack and Brokeh Theme Updates

by Michael Healy @ 1:00 pm on April 22nd, 2010 in themes with 37 Comments

Media Center Theme Pack Today we’ve got a special surprise set of downloads available. First, the popular Brokeh theme has been updated with a modified background to make reading text on the screen slightly easier. The theme has also been converted into a Media Center Studio theme package. This should make it much easier to install for everyone. Finally, we’ve got four additional themes that have been converted to MC Studio packages. Additionally, Theme7MC.com will be redirecting to this page for a short period while the site is folded into Hack7MC official.

Update: Find more themes and the original Theme7MC archives right here!

You can find download links for the five themes in the first pack available below. Download them individually by selecting them below or download the entire pack by selecting the package link.

To install the themes download them to your local Media Center machine. If downloading the entire pack extract them to the hard drive. Next, be sure to have a copy of Media Center Studio installed. Under the Themes menu tab select the Import Theme button and select the theme file to import.

Once imported into Media Center Studio select the theme from the Themes tab below and press the Apply button.

Hopefully this makes it much easier to distribute themes to users and eliminates much of the complications of the old way of applying the themes. If you’d like more information on making your own Media Center themes start here or check out our recent article on changing your media center background. Thanks for trying out our themes and be sure to leave any comments below.

This completely broke my Media Centre. As soon as I start it up now it says “Media Centre has stopped working”…any idea how I can fix it?

Had you ever edited the ehres.dll before? Might be a problem with Media Center Studio, idk.

Ahh nevermind the “restore default” option fixed it…and now the themes work too. Weird

cool post! i’ll have to mess with the 7MC themes again. Right now i’m using the basic black one which is pretty slick but some of the ones in the post look pretty neat as well!

Good timing; just this morning I was checking out the Brokeh theme and saw it wasn’t updated with a background that was faded to make it easier to read text. I really wanted to try the theme, and now I can!

Thanks to everyone involved to make this happen, it’s much appreciated.

Is it just me or does the Brokeh theme not show a background on extenders? I have tried all the others and they work fine, but Brokeh’s background disappears after the “Welcome” screen, and is left just black.

I have the same problem with Linksys extender, pity cause I like it best. All the other themes work fine, so it must be fixable.

Its weird seeing these themes again; it seems like it was ages ago that we were tinkering around with the ehres file. – The good times of the release candidate :)

So what can we expect from this ‘fold in’ mike?

The theme site will look the same as Hack7MC and say hack7mc at the top but hopefully I can find a good way to manage listings and user uploads. I haven’t gotten all the details worked out quite yet.

Just to those with issues:

Before you switch themes, make sure you have NO extenders running or on, and that you do not have media center running. Then apply and be OK.

To be safe, check your task manager to make sure you don’t see anything like: ehres.exe (user: extender auto)

Those all need to be stopped/not running to apply, otherwise weird things can happen :)

Why is it called “Brokeh” and not “Bokeh?”

I am unable to import these themes.

According to your instructions, I download the file and then open Media Center Studio and click on Theme tab –> Import. When I do I am provided with a dialogue box that allows me to import a *.mct file, *.vmctheme file or an ehres.dll file. The files themselves are Zip files. If I extract them, I can see the contents, but there are no *.mct, *.vmctheme files in there.

Apologies, as I look at the comments, it looks like this is my problem, but I would appreciate some help in importing the themes.

I am running Windows 7 x64 MC

Ok, I figured it out. I downloaded the large 250MB file, and opened it. I noticed that all of the files in there were named .mct, after looking at the .zip files it occured to me, that the single files must be renamed from .zip to .mct. I did that, and viola! it worked like a charm.

Thanks for making MC even better!

I can import the theme no problem but every time I apply them the program crashes.

It starts with the “Preparing…” bar then I get the error message box “Media Center Studio has stopped working”

Any idea how to get this to work?

How can I tweak the posted themes? I’d like to be able to change the fonts colors, but either I can’t find the right ones, or I’m not saving them.

Also, why are all posted themes so dark? I’d love to see somebody post a really cool theme for a bright room. Some of us have the tv/extender on the rec room, or even outdoors by the pool, and there they simply didn’t work. I used to use WMC high contrast white in these situations, so you’ll understand how the above won’t work.

Ok, so i figured it out… if you download an individual theme you are just given all the .png files. BUT if download the theme PACK you and the .mct files.. my bad!

@Reply #10630 from Michael Healy [Reply]

The single themes should be downloading as .mct files, not to be opened in an archive program. They should just need loaded into MC Studio.

I would have to say… these themes are nice! They are a good break from the classic blue…. BUT they just lack the flare of a finished product. When you use them, you loose the smooth animation for the original theme. Also, you loose some of the features like enabling your slide shows to PAN AND ZOOM… When they put finishing touches on some of the themes they would be worth paying for!!

You shouldn’t be losing any options after installing these themes, they are simply image replacements. You may experience a somewhat less “smooth” experience depending on hardware as these do use much higher resolution images than the original blue theme.

I’m not certain why that would be the case unfortunately. The ehome directory does exist but the ehres.dll file doesn’t?

No matter how hard I try, Media Center Studio will not load and I get the following:

Description:
Stopped working

Problem signature:
Problem Event Name: CLR20r3
Problem Signature 01: media center studio.exe
Problem Signature 02: 0.0.6.5
Problem Signature 03: 4ae41e5e
Problem Signature 04: PresentationFramework
Problem Signature 05: 3.0.0.0
Problem Signature 06: 4a174fbc
Problem Signature 07: 624f
Problem Signature 08: e1
Problem Signature 09: System.Windows.Markup.XamlParse
OS Version: 6.1.7600.2.0.0.256.48
Locale ID: 1033

I have .net framework 3.5 and 4.0 installed so not entirely sure what the issue is. I wish I could find a copy of the beta release as the on-click stuff just isn’t cutting it.

When i apply any of the themes everything seems to work fine except for listening to music. After about 15 minutes the album artwork stops rendering properly and mc almost completely freezes. Any ideas what the problem can be. (8gig ram 2.5 dual core ati hd4350 videocard) My hardware should be able to handle the extra resolution from the themes right?

What if I want to go back to the default Win7 theme? How does one get the default back?

@Reply #11053 from Michael Healy [Reply]

There should be a restore default option at the top of Media Center Studio near the options to apply the themes.

Win7 Home basic doesnt have a Media Center. I’m guessing this might be a small issue since you are trying to MODIFY THE MEDIA CENTER that doesnt exist?

LMAO!

Is there any way we can get the individual background images? I’ld like to use the same backround as my desktop image and backdrop for xbmc. It would give the whole system some nice cohesion.

Thank you for your great work on this site. I visit almost daily.

You can open the MCT file with a zip archive program and retrieve the background from Resources/ehres/Images/Common.Background.png
