MCEBuddy Still Saving Space and Cutting Commercials now in WTV

logo12 The last look we had at MCEBuddy was of the still forthcoming 2.0 version which was and still is missing a user interface. While this was fairly cumbersome on the end user it did get the job done. Luckily since then WTV support has been added to the version 1.1 product allowing for doing the basics that MCEBuddy could originally accomplish only on older file types. The main benefit being that the original already has a user interface making the configuration considerably simpler. Unfortunately, the program still isn’t cutting commercials directly out of WTV files and outputting WTV files, the file will still have to be converted along the way.

To get started download MCEBuddy 1.1 (x86) or MCEBuddy 1.1 (x64) from our Hack7MC mirror or check the official MCEBuddy page for the latest version download links. Once downloaded, extract the files from the archive and run the setup .msi file. Go through the standard setup install then run the program’s configuration from Programs –> MCEBuddy –> MCEBuddy Configuration. After launching the program you can access the configuration at any time through the System Tray as long as you minimize the program instead of exiting.

config

The first area contains the settings to be used when converting the video file. Choose what type of video to output at the end as well as whether or not to delete the original file, cut commercials, sort by series and start the program minimized to the System Tray. For HD programming I would recommend WMV (no resize) or H.264 MP4 (no resize, 2-pass) to retain the best quality video. Standard Definition television can likely get by with lower quality settings such as MPEG2 or H.264 regular. Though there was a minor issue with one file that was processed most came out fairly good quality.

Also of note in the configuration is the Video Paths section. Here you will need to set your Recorded TV directory and another directory to use for processed videos. The program seems to strongly dislike using the same directory for both and files disappeared forever when trying to use the same directory for each.

ate my file

Set to the default directories the program performed quite well. WTV files were converted and commercials were cut with a fair deal of success from the shows. You can see above that a File Log is provided giving you a full recount of processed files as well as a more detailed events log that will gladly provide you with details on each step of the process performed on every file.

events

Unfortunately, the program doesn’t yet support the cutting of commercials directly from a WTV file so they’ll all need to be converted. Curiously the program doesn’t seem to offer DVR-MS output either which would help to overcome the last issue being the incompatibility of Recorded TV and non Media Center file types (WTV and DVR-MS). This means you’ll either need to use the Videos section under Pictures and Videos or obtain a third-party plugin like Media Browser to look through the files.

Aside from those few issues MCEBuddy does exactly what it claims it will do, convert video files into other video files automatically and even remove commercials. Hopefully we see some further progress on version 2 and it will include support for WTV files natively. It was clear early on that the switch to WTV from DVR-MS would hinder development of programs like this (likely intentionally) and it’s a problem still lingering shortly after the official release of the operating system.

Been loving this program for quite some time. still works well. One glitch: 1.1, 64-bit — if commercial skipping is enabled (using showAnalyzer OR comskip), it wipes out the sound after the first cut-commercial.

So don’t set it to delete your original files unless you run it a few times and are sure that it your encoded files work correctly.

also, here is the main Download page. the Download is a javascript link, so no quick way to right-click-save-link-as. just go there and pick the 2nd download if you want x64

(last WTV should read DVR-MS?)

WTV is a Windows 7 Media Center file format, there shouldn’t be any plugins needed but it will not play on Windows Vista’s default installation.

This program shouldn’t be outputting WTV either, check your C:\users\Public\Public Video folder for output video. Again, unless you are on Vista in which case the folder will be different.

i installed this and ran a couple of my recorded TV shows (wtv) through it with the h.264 mp4 (no resize) setting, commercial skip and sort by series.

the files went through MCEbuddy just fine it would seem. i set up media browser to read the output dir and launched MB just fine.

when in MB, on the MB home screen, i tried to move to select the dir that contains the recorded tv, and just trying to select that on the MB home screen caused MB to crash with the MC error “Media Broswer cannot be started” and gives me the “remove this application” checkbox along with an OK box.

any ideas on this? at first i thought maybe a codec issue (i’m using shark007) but it never even gets close to playing any files, it crashes before i even get to select the dir containing the MCEbuddy output files. codec issues would only cause playback (or non-playback) issues, correct? i don’t think that codecs wouldn’t crash MB when on the MB home screen…

think this is a problem with MB itself that i should take up with that forum? or is it something with MCEbuddy?

i’m re-running MCEbuddy on a few files now using the WMV (no resize) setting, to see if the .mp4 files were the cause, but MB is supposed to be able to handle h.264 mp4 files, isn’t it?

Can anyone advise on whether or not this better than DVRMSToolBox for skipping commercials on television programmes recorded in the UK?

How is this any better???

What I want is the commercials cut out of the file, and for the file to have a .WTV or .DVR-MS extension.

I want to see my recorded TV in (guess what?)…Recorded TV!

i wouldn’t mind seeing my recorded commercial free tv in media browser as long as a) it was sorted by tv show and b) i was able to delete files with my remote after watching like i can in the MC recorded tv area

so in order to try to get media browser to correctly display (and group by series) the files that MCEBuddy outputs i’m playing with a bunch of file renamer/mover apps that i’ve found and will post back if i get anything to work decent.

it’s really a lot of work to be this lazy :)

It’s kinda misleading to suggest the MCE Buddy provide .wtv or .dvr-ms output files. It’s never done that or claimed to do it. It is by far the most robust application available to go from large MPEG-2 based .wtv or .dvr-ms files to more modern codec-based files such as .h264 that are routinely about 20% as large as the original .wtv files. The ONLY advantage of .wtv is the metadata. Frankly, if you have alot of recorded tv, this is anextremely valuable tool that should not be overlooked.

Looks like something I would really use, since I would be I prefer using Media Browser but get the error:

Unable to extract MPEG from WTV file. This may be a WTV/H264 file which is not supported by this version of MCEBuddy.

I hope the ‘this version’ mean its on the roadmap. BTW, the feed is coming from a HDPVR.

Same issue, I also get the:

Unable to extract MPEG from WTV file. This may be a WTV/H264 file which is not supported by this version of MCEBuddy.

Error and also pulling form an HD source. Must be a HD stream issue ?

i now have MCEBuddy incorporated in such a way that everything is automated to grab recorded tv (wtv) files out of MC’s default recorded TV folder, remove the commercials and convert the files, and then save the resulting files in the correct dir structure so that i can browse all the recorded tv files in MB along with the rest of my media.
it is very slick.
