MediaBrowser Firestorm Brings Performance, Stability and Features

orbz-fire-icon MediaBrowser has long been a favorite for anyone looking to replace the built-in movie library browser with something that has a few more features. MediaBrowser is a free plugin for Windows 7 Media Center that adds more advanced library management, multiple view options for browsing the library and plenty of sorting options. It doesn’t take long with this plugin to see why it’s so popular. The latest iteration, Firestorm, adds even more features to the mix including a vastly faster user experience as well as increased stability over previous versions. For new Media Center enthusiasts Firestorm offers the perfect timing to try Media Browser for the first time.

Long time users will immediately notice a speed improvement over previous versions, especially while browsing large collections and when first starting the plugin. The entire experience is much more responsive making finding and playing the particular movie you’re looking for much less time consuming than previous versions. As an added bonus Firestorm includes experimental support for an SQLite database which will further improve the experience. To enable this feature you’ll simply need to download and copy the correct version of the SQLite DLL to the ProgramData\MediaBrowser folder.

Another notable feature of MediaBrowser FireStorm is that themes can now be created and released as plugins separate from the core code. Now just like with the plugin interface you can download and switch between themes without the need for a completely new release of the MediaBrowser plugin. In fact the Vanilla theme which was previously included in the main package is now a plugin shipped separately. In order to download the Vanilla theme you’ll need to open the MediaBrowser Configuration and select Add from the Plugins tab. Next select the File –> Sources menu and Add the following source: http://www.throgsoft.com/plugins/plugin_info.xml. Afterward, a restart of the configuration utility is required to load the new plugin listings.

For long time users there have also been some changes to the ImagesByName structure. Images have now been separated into appropriate categories with a new folder structure. In order to facilitate this transition there is a migration tool available for download. Of course, for those new to Media Browser (or who just need to update their images) there is always the extensive package offered by TheHTPC.net.

Another feature long desired has been added as well in multiple entry points. Now, for each section created in the configuration tool MediaBrowser also creates an entry point. Using Media Center Studio you can add these new entry points to any start menu strip. Simply enter the start menu tab and expand the Entry Points at the bottom then drag and drop a point onto the strip. This is a great feature for those who prefer to browse recorded TV shows inside Media Browser or those who simply want to select HD/SD folders from the start menu.

Firestorm is a definite step forward for MediaBrowser which should be a definite upgrade on every Media Center enthusiasts list. The performance and stability alone are quite an improvement over previous releases a certainly cements MediaBrowsers status at the top of the heap of movie library plugins. New users and old alike can download this latest release from the Google Code repository.

Awesome! It’s always great to play with a new build of MediaBrowser.

How would one set an image for the “Film Trailers” plugin? It appears in the MediaBrowser menu as a blank icon by default (in Poster View).

What its free and open source…..

Why would I pay $100 for MyMovies… This thing looks great !

Best features must surely be the multiple entry – WOW – I can set it up for Kids Movies and they wont see the porn !

Mymovies now sucks….

Mymovies is free and you can hide adult movies in the latest release. been using it for years. Tried this and it was very unstable for me.

mymovies is bloated and overkill. i do not need a database like that. and it really isn’t “free” if you want the bells and whistles. you can pay for that or contribute. PITA!

I have a quick question, where have you seen more information about the images by name migration tool. I ran it and it just crashed, should i run it in the image by name folder?

What theme is displayed above? I installed the latest (without uninstalling the previous build) and I’ve had two issues.

a) The default theme(s) (Diamond and Default) don’t look like that.

b) When I tried adding the plug-in source as you described, basically ‘nothing happens’. The *.xml file is in the ‘Add Dialog’ but the list of plug ins doesn’t change.

To get the list view like that you need to press up while browsing the movies until you get the options at the top to appear, select view and choose list view.

I also forgot to mention in the article that you’ll need to restart the config utility after adding the source in order to get the additional items to appear.

To get the plugins to show up in the list I had to wait about 30 seconds after the config window popped up before clicking on plugins and then add.

You can get the old looking vanilla by installing the earlier version of vanilla from the plug ins list. (Version 1.0 beta)

Nice but the biggest issue isn’t fixed; massive, sustained CPU usage when starting the plugin that doesn’t dissipate for quite a while (and affects video playback int eh form of occasional stutters when playing video). When’s the plugin going to be free of ehexthost.exe? THAT’S when I’ll be ecstatic. Still lov eth eplugin tho, just unable to use it for the most part because of the high CPU usage (AMD x2 4400+, 8GB, gigabit LAN so it’s not down to the machine being underpowered)

Is anyone else having problems using Vanilla 2 theme on the Xbox 360? Wired, not wireless, but the Vanilla 2 just seems to freeze when browsing my shows. Diamond is fine….any ideas?

I tried the last version of MB but it was useless for me because I record all of my shows and movies. MC7 appends the date and channel to EVERY recording and this totally confuses MB.

I tried Media Renamer but just could not get it to remove the date and channel so I could use Media Browser. Any ideas?

MikeS – try MetaBrowser, it will can watch your recorded tv folder, move the file to the appropriate folder, rename it, and download the metadata all automatically, that way it loads faster in MediaBrowser too.

I love the new Media Browser! It works perfectly….on my computer. However, when i go to play a movie through my media extender I get a Video Error and the movies won’t play. Everything shows fine (backdrop, synopsis, actor images) but it just won’t play VOB files. But I can still play them through the Movies link in Media Center. For some reason though it won’t play through Media Browser.

Any suggestions?

Is there another plugin like Media Browser or Open Media Libary that can read a XBMC type NFO files and Posters/Backdrops?

I have over 300 movies in my collection and re-scrapping and editing all the meta-data is not really an option….

wow, this site used to have updates every day, now its just getting stale… no offense…

do you need help with updates? This site has great and i would hate to see it get lost from lack of updates. I wouldn’t mind contributing from time to time if you need content.

Yeah, I am worried about this too. It’s scary when a site updates so regularly for a good length of time with great content and suddenly goes silent for an extended period of time.

CPU does seem to be an issue. I have an e7200 oc’d to 3.2ghz and running a .mt2s file averages 98% to 100.5%.

The same file on mediaplayer runs no more than 60%.
The problem started after I added SQLite (3 months ago). Note even when just sittig on a mediabrowser menu the cpu is clocking in excess of 70%. I’m using W7 32bit.
