WTVWatcher Automates WTV to DVRMS Conversion

large-app-icon As many former Vista Media Center users know, Windows 7 brought a new format to the Media Center in the form of the .WTV file. This new format is the new standard for recorded TV in Windows 7 Media Center, meaning all recorded TV will now be saved as WTV instead of the former standard DVR-MS. Unfortunately, this also means that programs with a long history of use by Media Center enthusiasts may no longer work with this new format. Luckily, however, Microsoft has been gracious enough to include a utility to convert WTV to DVR-MS through the right-click menu interface but doing all that conversion by hand can be tedious. That’s where WTVWatcher can take some work off your hands.

Sure there are other programs that have done this for a while now such as DVRMSToolbox but for the novice those solutions can be difficult to impossible to setup. For those looking for a simple solution to automatically convert WTV files to DVR-MS, it doesn’t get much simpler than WTVWatcher. To get started visit the WTVWatcher download site which will take you through the user agreement and required software and allow you to download the setup file.

Once installed, WTVWatcher operates as a system tray application with a small notification window to display progress. Upon running the program for the first time the display window will present you the option to set the folder to monitor for new WTV files, just press the button and select the location of your Recorded TV folder.

first run

WTVWatcher also provides a handful of options by selecting the wrench icon at the top of the display window. In the preferences dialog you can set the time to wait before files are processed after completion, icon and display options and whether or not the progress window should be displayed.

preferences

Showing the progress window seemed to require the restart of the program, although not mentioned, but once restarted we were able to monitor the progress of the conversions. Taking around 3 minutes on average to convert an hour long HD file with the progress displayed as a simple Windows dialog.

showui

The display window also displays a simple list of actions taken by the program notifying you of the beginning and end of conversions and the current folder being monitored. It’s safe to say that once the program has been setup most users will be setting it to simply minimize to the tray and run in the background however. It’s also important to note that once your files have been converted the original WTV file will be deleted, which is likely the preferred behavior in most cases but there is no option to disable the behavior.

progress

Aside from that small caveat, WTVWatcher performed flawlessly as expected. The program uses the built-in conversion tool to do the conversion from WTV to DVR-MS and simply takes the task of manually selecting and converting each file by hand saving you time. It doesn’t get much more utilitarian than this, WTVWatcher does what it was designed to do well and without any fuss or muss. For those looking to continue using Lifextender in Windows 7 this handy little tool is a godsend.

This works great! Along with lifexnder it is the best option for commercial skip at this time. To boot its very simple to use.

Immensely gratified to see alot of new people using it. Justifies the time I put in to this over the past two weekends.

There will be new updates (primarily based on user feedback now) that will address the issues mentioned here. It will arrive as a daily alert message in the WtvWatcher visual stack.

Cheers,

Paul Bruce

Awesome! Thank you for creating this.. For me it’s a matter of saving about a third of the HDD space!

An idea for a feature I’d like would be where it would call another program, such as LifeExtender, when it has finished conversions.

Cheers!

I downloaded this program and it automatically converted 18 wtv files to dvrms, pretty dark quickly. I then installed Lifextender, and couldn’t get it to remove commercials. With comskip, it would hang and with ShowAnalyzer, it would fail and blacklist every file. So I decided to try playing the dvrms files, and now they crash 7MC. I’m already on shaky grounds with my wife, since it’s been a pretty tough transition to ditch cable. Now I’ve ruined all of her Oprah, Dr. Phil, and The View recordings. I can hear her dialing the cable company already…

Any way to undo what this program has done? The files will still play in VLC, but the audio is out of sync (plus, my wife won’t like having to sit at a computer chair and watch them)

Finally something that actually works. Don’t like to have to do the file conversions, but its quick. And WTVWatcher + LifeExtender is overall a much cleaner setup than ShowAnalyzer + DVRMSToolbox + DVRMS MC Plugin – which never seemed to work right for anyone on WTV files…

Guess I spoke too soon. LifeExtender seemed to work initially on a few files, but since seems to blacklist everything after processing. And yes, I do have LifeExtender configured to copy over the icons and metadata. Very frustrating because these blacklisted files are getting processed and having their commercials removed – only to get reverted and blacklisted. Anyone else having problems?

I have tried this set up and it isn’t working that well for me.
The conversion to dvr-ms is flawless.
The issue is with lifextender. When it scans the directory it doesn’t seem to be able to recognise the converted files. Therefore nil commercial removal will be done.
I have dvr-ms files from vista in a seperate directory and if I point lifextender to them it will scan them without difficulty.
Any ideas anyone? I haven’t been able to find an answer to this anywhere.

Can you give me more details on what Lifextender is doing? Is it not doing anything at all with the files?

The conversion is being done by the official MS converter so I’m not sure why the trouble with the converted files but I will be looking at setting up Lifextender specifically soon so hopefully I can clear up those issues (or at least find out what the issue is).

Yep, seems to be a problem with Lifextender. Maybe we can roust those guys to pick up the development again on it and release some updates!

Note to all those married folks out there though, don’t just install software that messes with the spouse’s TV shows. Testing things out ‘offiline’ first in a ‘test’ directory first. You never know how things will go, and people don’t like their TV excised from them. :)

OK, so I added the initial workings of “Processing Rules” to WtvWatcher (under preferences > Processing Rules).

I included an initial set of the properties that most filtering situations would be resolved by using. For instance, adding a new rule to exclude content where ‘Watched’ equals ‘Yes’ or a rule where ‘Station’ contains ‘PBS’, would get you at least most of what you’re looking for.

Also in the new update, you can set an ‘Exit Time’, where if you set up a Windows Scheduled Task to start WtvWatcher at 11pm and the exit time is set to 5am, you have successfully scheduled a window of time where WtvWatcher doesn’t have to run all day long. This is useful when you use your primary PC as both a media center and your working computer.

Let me know how it goes,

Paul

I’ve had some time to work with Lifextender and WTVWatcher and the only issue I found was with a background process from ShowAnalyzer preventing Lifextender from processing files. If you’ve installed ShowAnalyzer try uninstalling it then attempting to manually scan your Recorded TV.

I did get a small error in the logs about ehiProxy not loading but it didn’t seem to prevent the processing of files. It’s a shame that more authors of free software don’t make their code open source so the community can improve on and learn from them.

did you have any issues of losing recorded tv metadata at any step in the process of using wtvwatcher and lifextender?

i’ve tried batch file wtv->dv-rms conversions and then run lifextender and i’ve noticed that the files in 7mc show with no metadata and say that they are only 1 min long (even tho they play just fine).

plus, lifextender seemed to fill my logs with errors and then blacklist the files, but that may have been a problem with showanalyzer…

Yah, I get the same issue when selecting the option to include metadata but cursiously when unselecting the option it retains the metadata and doesn’t have the issue.

WTV watcher works very well in converting the files to DVR-MS format, but beware – it may freeze your system if MC starts recording a new program while WTV watcher is working. That is my experience using Windows 7.

I found I couldn’t use either wtvwatcher OR MS’s wtv to dvrms converter. In about half of my recorded shows, the audio track was DROPPED (as in MISSING).

Unfortunately when I tried wtvwatcher the first time, I hadn’t realized that it not only deleted the original wtv file, but didn’t put it in the recycle bin and the couple of undelete utilities I’ve installed couldn’t recover them… Just the option to delete to the recycle bin could have saved me a lot of aggravation.

I was already using VideoReDo TV Suite before and it works fine – so I’m back to using that. I did like the idea of the conversion being done automatically….

Great programma and here some ideas,

1. Option the keep the original WTV file. Maybe with an option to copy the original file to a folder.

2. An option to create an automatic schedule time to start WTCWatcher.

3. Option to not convert any files when Media Center is recording.

4. Option to put the PC in sleep when finished converting. I like to do the convert in night time.

5. Would be great if you can convert to others files like AVI or MPG with this great speed. Have a Xtreamer and it’s not possible to play dvrms and WTF files. AutoDVRconvert and VideoReDo convert them quick buit i like one tool and your tool is great.

Hi, I’ve just installed this using the guide on life hacker but now when I go to play my tv shows they have no audio? I also accidentally emptied my recycle bin before realising it was putting the old files in there. Is there anything I can do to rectify this? It is also giving me a lot of errors saying this file is already transcoded you will have to delete manually. Any help would be greatfully appreciated.
