Hacking Windows 7 Media Center

Popular My Movies plugin comes to Windows 7 Media Center

MyMovies With the release of My Movies 3 one of the most popular movie library plugins for Media Center makes it’s way into Windows 7. The plugin has received a complete makeover to the user interface as well as updated code to work with the new structure of the Windows 7 Media Center platform. How does this update to an old standby fare against the new mainstays in the Windows 7 Media Center arena? My Movies does bring some features to the table that similar applications don’t have such as disc copying inside Media Center that may well make some converts of other plugin users. Let’s see how My Movies 3 stands up.

To get started My Movies 3 can be downloaded from the My Movies website. Downloading the plugin is completely free and the basic features are free for everyone to use but there are limitations built into the software. Users who haven’t used the My Movies software previously are likely to be surprised by the limitations. My Movies uses an Xbox Marketplace style points system for purchasing extra features. Points can be had for participating in the submission of movie metadata to any titles with less than adequate metadata or can be purchased for cold hard cash. A full compliment of features will set you back a whopping $50 if you should choose the cash route.

collection management

My Movies uses a collection management application to manage the titles in your movie collection. This setup allows you to install a server/client setup to enable storing your collection data at a single machine and network the data between multiple computers. This is certainly a plus, allowing edits to metadata and images to be propagated across a users entire network without needing to make the changes on each machine. Collection management applications are becoming a much more popular alternative to downloaded or handcrafted text/xml files to store metadata for your movie collection and proves to be much more user friendly.

For those opting to add points to their account through submitting metadata, they can do so through the collection management application. Simply locate any titles in your collection that contain less than adequate metadata, indicated by a yellow or red indicator icon next to the title. These titles are able to be updated inside the management application and will then ask you to submit your additional data to the My Movies service. You’ll need to read the guidelines first and agree to the terms of the service or face penalties including suspension of your account. The guidelines are an effort to prevent questionable data from being entered into the central system and keep the metadata complete and clean and curb submitting data simply for points.

obscured covers

Onto the real meat of the plugin, the actual Media Center application, we see a familiar interface similar to other popular movie collection plugins such as Media Browser and Open Media Library. This is actually a departure for My Movies, formerly featuring a more menu based interface reminiscent of the original Media Center. The interface has been updated to reflect the Windows 7 Media Center style but has run into some growing pains along the way.

As you can see in the image above, My Movies uses the default style to output the movie title, date and rating information. The problem comes in when the movie title extends to cover the majority of the third row, obscuring the view. To complicate the situation further, stopping on a single title for approximately four seconds results in the entire display fading into the fan art view and hiding the collection completely (by default, can be changed in options inside Collection Manager).

fanart

The other view available to users without the appropriate point levels, list view, suffers the same problem with the fan art display. Stopping on a single title fades the view making reading the listing impossible. Though the list view does have a description of each movie as well as ratings, dates, cast and crew and more information that remains visible.

compare list

For those not opting to go the metadata submission route the other two collection views will run you $20 and $40 respectively for covers with details or centered covers. While probably the biggest included feature, disc copying, costs a full $50 to unlock the feature. While this is likely a killer feature for a select few many will likely be content with ripping their disks on a networked pc and simply transferring them with plenty of free software available to get the job done.

movie details

Despite setbacks in the interface design, once they’re addressed My Movies 3 looks to provide a feature complete solution to browsing and even growing your Windows 7 Media Center movie library. The collection manager is solid and easy to use for even the newest of users and the plugin interface meshes very well with the default Windows 7 Media Center design making for a seamless integration into an existing system. Unfortunately, considering these usability problems and the price involved in unlocking many features that are included free with other Windows 7 Media Center plugins, disc copying aside, it’s hard to recommend My Movies 3 over the alternatives.

I have used Media Browser and My Movies extensively and agree that the model for My Movies feature requirements unlocking should be overhauled. Since I have been a long time user and frequent submitter of data the features were unlocked to me early on at no cost (except in my time submitting DVD movie data).
In my use I have found that the interface for Media Browser is very attractive (more so that even the latest My Movies 3) but not as full featured for as My Movies in many ways. My conclusion is with smaller collections Media Browser is the way to go (even though setting it up initially is quite a bit more technically involved than My Movies). It’s simple slick presentation is great for smaller collections where heavy searching and indexing is not really required.

For very large collections a true database solution in is still the best in my experience and My Movies has still be the best experience I have had. It does a good job of integarating some tools like AnyDVD and free ISO loaders like Virtual Clonedrive. (yes, you do pay for some of these).

Note: The backdrop fade-in issue noted can be disabled in the release version of My Movies 3. It’s in the Media Center configuration setting accessed through the Collection Manager.

In the options you set set the fade in for the backdrops from 2 to 10 secs or “Never”. Plus there are opacity settings for background and foreground.

Did you look at the options section in the Configure menu selection of Collection Management.

I’ve been using MM3 for around a month and its much more solid that the others you mention. The data is also better that the scrapers that are relied upon by the others.

I hadn’t seen the option to disable the fade previously, it’s really buried in the option of the collection manager. I would still adjust the default setting for the option since it was a fairly big turn off and first time users are unlikely to dig so deeply into advanced settings.

I have yet to experience any real issues with the other plugins which provide very similar views. Do you have examples of where My Movies is more reliable? In my runs it failed the metadata scraping in all the usual places: The Patriot and Pinocchio both returned the wrong movie and it seems to prefer special edition covers over the regular covers just as the others seem to.

We waited over a year to see My Movies 3. We waited months for the beta to finish – and in the end was it worth it – DEFINATELY NOT.

The UI as described in this article – is crap. Trying to do too much in too little space.

When a plugin costs more than the Operating System – something is funny… To get all features it costs USD$100. – Come On – Who is wanting to profit here…. Get the masses to provide data so he can onsell it in other ventures – this model just plain sucks.

The author is very arroganant in the forums, and just plainly only interested in the $$$. Unfortunately for DVD’s it is close to being the best of a bad bunch….

However for Tv stuff – you cant beat MyTV at http://mytv.senseitweb.com/ which is much more
reasonably priced as a plugin.

This little bunny aint gonna be paying for this crap with My Movies… Others are to come which will be better and cheaper

Mymovies is awesome and I’ve been using it for years. I haven’t paid anything to unlock the features, but I got like 4000+ contribution points when I archived my entire DVD collection.
I used mymovies 2 happily, so with all of the improvements in 3 I’m a very happy camper. The biggest improvement IMO is the performace with the switch to MCML.
And Brian isn’t arrogant in the forums. Every time I have had a question over the years he’s always in the forums answering questions. Even for me, who never donated a cent.
And I’m pretty sure the author of this software does it full time, and relies on donations. People don’t have to pay anything to unlock all of the features, either. (thought getting 2500 contribution points would be quite difficult at this point I’d imagine. I have nearly 5000 after extensive use.)
Anyways, give it a try. I can’t think of a thing to complain about in mymovies 3.

I have been using MM3 for about 2 years now.
I also entered my entire DVD collection and received very little points. The greedy pointers submit movies wayy before the movies are released so getting points is very hard and extremely time consuming.
I spent 1 hour updating 3 actors last night and received 25 points for it. (That is 1$ worth of points??) Then he says if the information is incorrect and removed I can lose my account?? WTF?
The rediculous 100$ is extremely over priced. If he lowered it more people would buy it and he could hire some people to help him with it.
I agree MM3 is better that it’s previous version, and keeps getting better but after 2 years it has changed very little.
As for his attitude on the forums. I have seen him be very friendly and very rude. It all depends on how you catch him. I have also talked to people that have left MM for others because of his attitude.
One thing to mention, Brian (MM Owner) has stated many times that My Movies is not designed for big screen TV’s and can not be adjusted for them. (increasing text size to be read at a distance)If you use a big screen for your home theater you might want to check it out to see if you can use it from your couch or chair.

Really? Is this supposed to be a review? You didn’t bother to read any of the instructions, you call out a feature as problem because you didn’t take the time to ask if it can be changed, and you didn’t leverage the free points system (or apparently contact the the author who has a note about reviews on his front page) to give a full story. I’ve used it and there are LOTS of things the initial release has over Native 7 and OML and some over Media Browser (and a number of things it lags behind Media Browser on).

If you are going to put up reviews (on this or any other product), please give more than initial impression (unless you actually call it that). Be it this or any other, you are doing a disservice to the hard work of the author an anyone in this audience who will not get a correct impression because you couldn’t be bothered to do a full review.

Also, it is probably not the best idea to post up reviews of products highlighting a number of movies you have that strangely have not been released for you to purchase. While I’d really suggest not stealing movies, if you are still going to, don’t implicate this site as supporting the behavior.

My reviews are intentionally from the viewpoint of the first time user. Every plugin, program and application on this site gets the same treatment. In fact I used this plugin for over a week which is more time than I dedicate to most plugins. If something is set as the default behavior, it seems logical to me that this behavior is the face the author wants put forward. It’s the behavior 99% of first time users will get. I found the features and user interface to be lagging behind all the other plugins available and that’s the review I gave it.

As for the free point system, I’m frankly more concerned in doing a disservice to my readers than the author of a program and reviewing a heavily upgraded version of a plugin over what the majority of my readers will get would indeed be a great disservice. I made a request to the email provided for the free points system, making sure to note I would be reviewing the non-upgraded features as the primary and never received a reply.

I am assuming that you are referring to the new Star Trek Movie not released yet.
You are assuming he has the not yet released movie. This may not be the case since you can download the information for the movie without actually having the movie.

I use Media Browser on a large 21TB collection….

No problem with large collections! you just cash to memory….that also makes the Artwork quick to load.

And MB also have things like support for Virtual clonedrive and you dont have to pay for it.
So I really cant see any benefits here.

Also I love the fact that every data for every movie is in each Movie folder so any new MCE in my house just scans the folders (and with parent control this is Great if you have children)

Just my 5cents… (-;

Having used all of the current crop of plugins, they all have thier pro’s and con’s. MediaBrowser looks great but lacks the functionality robustness of MyMovies3 or OML. MyMovies 3 has a great collection manager with good metadata retreival and viewing by genre’s, ratings etc just works same as OML. MyMovies3 cost is rediculous nuff said. One thing I like about MyMovies3 is the fact it displays an age rating icon which is country specific (UK for me) instead of just text such as ‘PG’. MHealy maybe a comprehensive comparison review of all three would really help new MC users make an informed choice? Personally I would like to see a plugin that has the database, server/client and fuctionality of OML and MyMovies3 with some of the eye candy of MediaBrowser. I agree the MyMovies options are not immediately obvious to the new user but then again MediaBrowser requires a fair amount of forum surfing in order to get it ‘just right’. Like I said pro’s and con’s with them all but I think OML is in a good position to learn from it’s predecessors and become the plugin of choice.

ive been really excited for you to review my movies 3…not for the plugin aspect, but because of the whs add-in. how does the whs add-in work with the database manager? how does it all work? i dont want to muck up my brand new (custom built) whs, when i can wait for someone who knows what theyre doing, to write a review about it.

ps: ive noticed that you seem to be one of the headliners of the mediabrowser project…is that true? shouldnt you put disclaimers on reviews for plugins like this?

I haven’t tried the WHS portion of the My Movies project but I’ll give it a look when I get the chance. I imagine it runs as a simple SQL server to server the data to each client machine.

I’m not involved with the development of the Media Browser project. As far as I know the senior developers of Media Browser are still Sam Saffron, Jas Manghera and Paul Haley though the project is open source. But I haven’t personally provided any code or anything to the project.

This app completely broke my Media Center, to the point of requiring a reinstall of Windows to fix. It broke everything, from movie playback to tv recording, to even the cover art on my movies vanishing. It was a nightmare that I do not want to revisit. I’m sticking with the stock Win7 movie system.

I have used Media Centre for several years now. I use MyMovies, OML and Media Browser. For a first time user I would recommend MyMovies since it quickly sets you up with quality metadata – pictures, actors etc. In my experience all 3 have strengths and weaknesses. Once your movies are organized its easy to use all 3 apps: by default I use OML for all Kids, MCE DVD folder for my wifes foreign languages movies, MyMovies for movies (great for searching by director, actor etc) and Media Browser for everything (folders include music videos and TV documentaries). If one app lets me down (all of them can fail) it takes minutes to change the setup – no problems.
Why would any user restrict themselves to a single app?
This is a great website with quality info but this particular review is a little harsh. On Vista x64 platform MyMovies was far more stable than the other 2.

The metadata didn’t seem any better than that which I was able to get through other metadata programs like metabrowser in my experience. Also, to the un-upgraded user who only receives two views and no disk copy or other advanced features it really seems to be just a crippled version of Media Browser.

Any person using MCE must understand its not plug’n'play (we all wish it was) instead it requires maintenance and updates as underlying technology changes – MKVs, multi audio tracks, subtitles etc.

Over the last 2 years MyMovies has been constantly updated, i.e. its actively supported especially compared with OML. So if problems do occur MyMovies will be fixed relatively quickly.

Disc copy in my opinion is not a requirement of any MCE front-end. There are far better specialised software options to save your movies onto your hard drive – with/without audio/subtitle tracks or just main movie.

I use MCE DVD folder/OML/MediaBrowser and MyMovies and enjoy and urge all users to try them. All will have strengths and weaknesses but its a constantly changing environment and users have different requirements and platforms and to dismiss one as ‘crippled’ is unfair.

Your missing a really KEY feature of MyMovies that puts it way over the top and makes the $100 worth every cent.

It will stream DVD’s to an extender. Perfectly. Everytime.

Video_TS and ISO, as well as ANY format not supported by your extender will be transcoded and played.
