Hacking Windows 7 Media Center

Windows 7 Media Center Sleep Timer Plugin

7MC Sleep Timer As any bachelor can tell you the basic sleep timer function built into any recent (or even not so recent) television is the perfect partner for those nights falling asleep on the couch. This basic functionality has long been missing from Windows Media Center however. For those missing this feature, look no further. The Green Button forum member StixBit has created a plugin to fill the gap, providing a Sleep Timer menu that allows for 30 minute, 60 minute and custom sleep timers.

To get started using this handy little plugin, download and install the package either from StixBit’s LiveDrive or the Hack7MC server. Once installed, launch Windows 7 Media Center, you’ll find the plugin in the Extra Programs area under the Extras menu.

menu

From inside the plugin interface you’ll find options to set a sleep timer for 30 and 60 minutes as well as the ability to setup a custom time at five minute intervals by selecting the Custom Timer button and pressing the right arrow until you’ve got the appropriate amount of time. Once you’ve got your custom timer set just press the button and the sleep timer will take care of the rest.

There are even options to turn off the Monitor from the sleep menu as well as cancel the timer completely. Unfortunately, however, this plugin doesn’t currently work with extenders and accessing the Sleep Timer from the Extras Menu is slightly more cumbersome than your standard TV sleep timer. If the timer could be set through a simple button press of the remote it would be quite a bit more user friendly.

For those looking to add this basic function to their Windows 7 Media Center though the solution is more than adequate to get the job done. It’s great to see the Media Center community coming together to add the type of features included in other systems that seem to have been left aside by the Microsoft team. Thanks to StixBit for this handy plugin and be sure to give it a try!

If you have the Harmony One, you can use the iMon software built in timer and put the computer to sleep with one button. I added a sequence so my receiver, tv, and media center all turn off/sleep in 30 min.

Wow! This is an excellent plugin. I’ve been waiting for something just like it because my computer has been overheating sometimes when I leave it on overnight. Thank you, StixBit!

A plug-in like this should have been available 10 years ago. It makes things on the cooling front so much easier and more logical. There are some nice surprises with Windows-7, and maybe some of the hacks or plug-ins prove that the best is yet to come.

I’d like to find one that simply closes MC and not shut down the computer.

If you visit the thread of the add-in on TGB, you will see that version 1.2 added this option. Version 1.3 is now out as well.

Can’t get it to install. McAfee blocks because it identifies as containing a worm.

Will this also work for a Media Center Extender device like the Linksys DMA2100/DMA2200 or the Xbox 360?

Not to be a Debbie Downer, This is a good idea, but I think you really missed the point. The real problem is not some person falling asleep with the TV on. It is the Wife or Kids who do not want to learn how to use the MCE PC and therfore they just shut the TV off, like they ALWAYS did before and walk away (who cares if the HTPC is working its butt off in the back ground sending 30FPS at 60 Hz refresh rate to never never land. Well I care, a lot, my first video card made it 6 months before it melted the fan off. If you really want to do this correctly copy what my Samsung Aquos TV has. In the setup, choose a time (I picked 2 hours). Everytime a key on the remote is pressed the timer resets. If you get to 5 minutes a small popup appears in the lower left corner for 10 seconds “no operation off:5″ again at 4 and 3… at zero minutes it turns off. If you did this with MCE (force sleep if not recording or at least send a stop command so TV quits spooling and MCE can sleep on its own) you would save thousands of $$ in electricity and burned up video cards…
By the way if the HTPC goes to sleep, my Aquos will shut down in 3 minutes of no sync signal, I am sure many other TVs will do the same, so in my house the only thing that would be left on is the 1000W stereo – that sucks, and if you wanted you could use the IR blaster to fix that for me as well :) , but one device beats 3 sucking up the Juice!!!!

Just my 2 cents, tring to save $2…

Two things I wanted to mention.
First you CAN set this to just shut down MediaCenter.
It’s in the config file options. This also lets you set the predefined shutdown times.
The one thing I didn’t like is the lack of remote support.
You can’t navigate the shutdown menu via remote.
I really hope they fix this.
