stock_shared-by-me Interested in streaming the latest episodes of your favorite TV series to wherever you happen to be on the road, over the internet? Of course you are! Luckily Windows 7 has this feature built in, all you need to do is activate it. All you need is Windows 7 and a Windows Live ID to link Media Player to. Get started by opening up Windows Media Player.

WMP Allow Internet Access

Under the Stream menu tick the option to Allow Internet access to home media. This will bring up a dialog allowing you to setup an online ID provider. Select the option to Add an online ID provider.

link online ID

At this point only Windows Live online identifications are capable of connecting your Windows libraries over the internet but that’s to be expected. I wouldn’t expect to see any alternative providers in the near future either.

Once you’ve added Windows Live as an online ID provider select the option to Link online ID. If this is the first time you’ve setup a Windows Live online link you’ll be prompted to download the Windows Live Sign-in Assistant. Select and install the component that matches your operating system from the Microsoft Download site. Both x86 and x64 versions are available.

After successful installation you’ll be able to add a Windows Live account to your Windows Live ID provider. Once you’ve entered your account information you’ll see a success notification.

Repeat the process on each PC you’d like to access media on and each will appear under the Other Libraries item in the left hand pane. You’ll now be able to stream any non-DRM content from one PC to another remotely.

That’s all there is to it. Stay tuned to Hack7MC to get even more coverage of remote streaming features in Windows 7 as well as integrating Live Mesh into your Home Theater setup. Thanks to Simon May for pointing us in the direction to enable this great feature!

This is great but is it possible to stream live TV from a remote location similar to SlingBox?

Not unless you can find a way to initiate recording so you can stream the resulting recorded TV file.

I’ve set this up on my Win7 MC box and now i’m trying to access the recorded tv on an XP SP3 box. WMP 11 on XP doesn’t have the Stream > Allow Internet access to home media option. Is this Windows 7 to Windows 7 only?

I have W7 machines record and then move TV to a WHS. Is it possible to get at the recorded TV on the WHS through the W7 machines? Doesn’t appear to work. Maybe if I map the WHS Recorded TV folder on the W7 machine?

You think this jives with Windows Mobile? If not 6.1, then 6.5?

I did this, and from my office pc (Win7 x64, not in a domain), I cannot see my home media, although from home (Win7 x86) I can see the office media just fine. What else do I need to do?
