radiotime logo Looking to increase your options for online radio inside of Windows 7 Media Center? RadioTime boasts over 100,000 radio stations in it’s directory and has created a Windows Media Center plugin to allow you to access it all from your HTPC. Access music, talk, sports and world radio as well as an easy to use directory of local stations for use with your radio tuner.

To get started head over to the Media Center plugin page and download the new installer which includes support for Windows 7. Downloading the installer, found in the link below the green Get It Now button, is your best bet on Windows 7 as mixed results have been reported with the Get It Now installation. Once installed you’ll find RadioTime in your Extra Programs menu.

first page

Upon first opening the RadioTime plugin you’ll be presented with a random selection of online radio options from the directory. Each time you enter the plugin it will suggest new stations though they don’t seem to have any rhyme or reason behind the suggestions. Presenting a selection of stations based on listening history would have been preferred.

From here you can also browse by station type. Selecting a type from Talk, Music, World or Sports will give you an additional genre selection option. With the exception of Sports, each station type has a number of genres to select from.

genre selection

Browsing through the stations you can play them directly from this interface or in some cases get more information on a particular station. Most stations don’t provide this extra information but pressing the Info button will allow you to add a station to your presets. For those the do give extra information, which will be denoted by the current show title displayed below the station, you can get a listing of the show schedule as well.

station info

That’s really all there is to browsing through the RadioTime directory to find and listen to your favorite or even new internet radio stations. For those with a hardware FM tuner, which is a typical feature of your TV tuner hardware, you can even browse and tune local stations. You’ll need to enable FM tuning in the top right corner of the local listings then you’ll be able to browse and tune your local FM stations right from RadioTime.

There you have it! Easy to use internet and local radio from RadioTime. Be sure to stick around Hack7MC as we review even more Windows 7 Media Center plugins.

This is fantastic! It can play many stations that other players cannot play i.e. 102.1 The Edge in Toronto.

Yey, another way to get radio!

Now I have the choice of listening to it through live tv, tunerfree mce or radio time. I wish i could get it through the radio icon on the music strip; at the moment i can get it from everywhere else accept there.

Nice extra though

I love this app, but had a small problem using it at first. Some of the Internet streaming providers, can’t remember which ones, would open a Media Player warning window in the backgroud that would not allow changing streams. If you find you cannot change streams, minimize 7MC and see if there is a window behind it that is asking for your permission.

I tried RadioTime out yesterday for the first time and I am really impressed with it. I even found the local radio station from my home town back in the UK.

The only issue I have is when I click on the Local Radio option from the menu I get an error. The message doesn’t say much other than “we’re sorry, an error occurred”.

If I go to the RadioTime website, login and then click Local Radio on there it does list stuff ok.

I used VistaRadioStreamson Vista and apparently it works with W7. It just populates tons of presets in the normal Radio section.

You can also get BBC stations (including listen again) using BeebMC.

There’s also mcShoutCast for more internet radio stations.

I will give this one a try though, thanks!

Nice, but I wish I could get it back to how I had it when I first got my DMA2100, where it wasn’t buried in Extras, rather a choice on the main menu under Music.

Does anyone know how you can open this to preset my default? Would also be nice if you could put it under Music as well and not pinned in Extras

I also find that it runs fairly slow to navigate, you can definately tell that it is a plug in.

This works great but the audio quality of the stream in RadioTime in MC7 is not as good as the same station when going through the browser on RadioTime.com.

Very nice with one problem. In Windows 7 the scroll arrows on the boxes are in the same spot in the lower right as the media controls.

Does anybody have any clue how to setup autologin for this. It’s kind of annoying using a remote control to type in a username.
