Hacking Windows 7 Media Center

7MC’s Slideshow Screensaver and Album Art Waterfall

by Michael Healy @ 9:00 am on August 5th, 2009 in music library, pictures with 18 Comments

Pictures Among the improvements included in Windows 7’s Media Center are a new album art waterfall display for Now Playing music and a brand new Photo slide show screensaver. Both are enabled by default but what if you’d like to turn them off or have done so by accident? Maybe you’d like to change the settings a bit. Let’s take a look a configuring these new features.

waterfall

The new album art waterfall displayed behind the currently playing music selection is a subtly animated display of random album art from your music collection slowly falling toward the bottom of the screen. Of course, if this subtle animation gives you a bit of vertigo or that Spice Girls cover that could result in years of ridicule from the boys needs hidden we better locate those settings.

From the Media Center start menu locate Settings –> Music –> Now Playing. At the bottom of this screen you’ll see options to adjust the Now Playing Background. At this point there’s no options to choose which covers are displayed and which are not but you can enable the animation, use a still background or disable the background all together.

Windows 7 Media Center also packs a brand new Photo screen saver. Enable or disable it from Settings –> Pictures –> Slide Show Screensaver.

screen saver options

Now after the set period of time your favorite pictures will be displayed as a fresh screensaver. To adjust what pictures are shown in the screensaver you’ll need to adjust your favorite pictures settings in Settings –> Pictures –> Favorite Pictures. Here you can adjust the slideshow to use a specific set of pictures including those with a certain rating, by folder or slideshow or simply all pictures.

That’s all there is to adjusting these new features in Windows 7 Media Center. Hopefully you enjoy these new additions even more now that we’ve discovered just how to tweak them to your preferences.

The Photo Screen Saver was enabled for extenders in the Windows 7 Beta build but has been missing since. Is there anyway to turn it back on for extenders?

Clean install and I don’t have a Moving Images option in my Now Playing Settings. :( Just Still Images or None.

NM… Sliding Wall doesn’t work if you disable media center animations.

The only problem is that WMP 11 downloads extremely low looking resolution album art. It looks terrible on a big screen HDTV.

I’m with Andres – any backdoor way to enable this on extenders (specifically the 360)?

I’m not sure why they disabled it for extenders after having it in the pre-RC versions but I’ll look into a way to re-enable it.

Not easily, I think it would involve editing the ehres.dll file with Restorator or a similiar utility.

Is the only way to rate photos so they will show up in the slideshow to rate them from 7MC? My photos are all located on a Windows Home Server and it seems that if I rate the photos from another machine with Windows Live Gallery 7MC does not pick up the rating.

are ther any alternatives to wmc7 ’s photowall screensaver? a simple clock or rss fed display would be handy since when in idle mode id rather the screen do something useful

If you turn off the Photowall screensaver 7MC should revert to your account’s selected screensaver settings in Windows 7.

no, i’ve never been able to get it to work that way. i’ve had the general setting for the 7mc not to stay on top & the photowall is switched off. hmm. it’s a pretty standard installation (no mc studio fiddles) & a few extras addins. it’s not a biggy but thanks for yr suggestion

Hmm, It worked when I tested it on my machine switching to blank, and Mystify both, after a minute. Which version of the OS are you using?
