Hacking Windows 7 Media Center

Remove Recorded TV Movies from the Media Center Movie Library

by Michael Healy @ 9:00 am on July 16th, 2009 in movie library, tv listings with 5 Comments

AsSeenOnTV If you’ve ever recorded movies from live TV in Windows 7 Media Center you may have noticed that by default these movies are also included in your Media Center Movie Library. For some this may be a perfect fit but others likely won’t want commercial laden and edited for TV movies filling up their Movie Library listings. Ian Dixon of The Digital Lifestyle has the solution in the form of a simple registry edit.

To get started open up Regedit by typing “regedit” into the start menu’s search box and pressing enter. Next using the tree listing on the left hand side locate the following folder:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Media Center\Settings\ProgramGuide

program guide

Next add a new DWORD entry by right-clicking the right hand pane and selecting New –> DWORD. Name this new entry excludeTVFromMoviesLibrary and then double click the new listing to set the value. To disable TV movies from appearing in your Movie Library set the value to 1, for the default behavior set the value to 0.

new dword

That’s it, close Regedit and restart your Windows 7 Media Center for the changes to take effect.

Of course, you could always download this registry file to remove TV movies from the Windows 7 Media Center Movie Library but it’s always good to know what a registry file is changing and how to reverse it. Thanks to Ian Dixon for the tip and be sure to stop by The Digital Lifestyle for even more Media Center related news and info.

is it possible that this could be done the other way around?
i want to exclude recorded Movies from the recorded TV section and have them only show up in the movie library?
i’ve searched the web but cannot find any way that windows 7 will do it natively or any automatic addon, that doesn’t require me doing something everytiem a new movie is recorded

RE: Jessica

Same here – I’ve been looking around for a way to do the same thing but as of yet no luck. It seems stupid to include recorded movies in the recorded TV library as well as movies, it just makes finding your recorded TV shows more difficult as you are routing through all of the movies you have recorded too. A setting to remove this would be a welcome addition.

Hi guys: I had same desire and resolved it but had to write a program to do so. Write-up is here:

It’s easily re-used by anyone and should solve your problem – please spread the word as I battled with it for ages before solving and would like to spare others the pain!
