Hacking Windows 7 Media Center

Media Browser 2.1 Adds Plenty of New Features

media browser 2.1 The latest revision of Media Browser has been in the works for a while now. Among the new features are a whole new skin, a plug-in system, Podcast support, weather display and external players. Of course, with such an ambitious release there’s bound to be some confusion and even a few bugs to be found. Let’s take a closer look at some of these new features!

The first thing most users are going to be presented with is the updated configuration program. This new version includes support for downloadable plugins as well as an entire new Advanced section area.

Plugin Downloads

Adding plugins to your Media Browser install was far easier than could’ve been imagined before seeing it in action. Just go into the Plugin tab and select the plugin from the list of available plugins. The program will then install it for you which is about as easy as it could possibly be.

Moving on from plugins you’ll also find tabs to add your favorite podcasts to the new Media Browser as well as the option to add external players for individual file types. Unfortunately, I was unable to get this particular feature to work so it’s still unknown how well it works or the ease of getting back into your original Media Center interface.

diamond initial page

Getting into Media Browser where the real action is you’ll find a completely new interface upon entering. This is a big improvement over previous versions that simply displayed a list of the folders you had added.

vanilla intro

This new interface is highly informational as well. Here you’ll see your local weather, if you’ve configured it, your folders listed across the bottom and the latest additions to your collection. Each skin includes a different style from this front area as well with Vanilla displaying only a single title but including a short description along with it.

weather

The new weather display is something that would be a wonderful inclusion to the default Media Center interface and is something that other home theater applications have had access to for some time already.

Digging even deeper into this enormous release you’ll find theatrical trailers (if you’ve installed the plugins) available from both iTunes (in HD!) and FilmTrailer.com. Using a fairly straightforward, folder type display, you’ll find more trailers than you’re likely to ever heard of right at your fingertips.

trailers

On one machine used it took several reloads of Media Browser to get trailer covers to load into the interface, however, though a second machine got the immediately. Also, the addition of trailers to our existing movie collections would be a big plus that didn’t make it into this release.

metadata

Also a big new feature in this release of Media Browser is the inclusion of a complete new theme. The new Diamond theme as an easier to read view to some of the more text intensive areas such as the Movie Details view. Using this new theme the initial view displays five of the most recently added movies in each folder group as well.

For the few bugs they are far outweighed by the advantages of the new features that have made it in. The addition of an entirely new plugin system means that third-party development will likely propel Media Browser even farther in no time at all. This is certainly an ambitious release and a must try for any Media Center user!

It is an excellent upgrade.A little hint in setup I would like to share.
I set up my original MB install to show detail view with cover flow below, I initially activated Diamond to check it out but lost my detail/coverflow view.
If you run initial setup with default skin then setup your favoured view then go back and activate Diamond it should give you the Diamond skin with your chosen view (in my case detail/coverflow)

Anyone have any idea how to add a folder icon/image to the trailers folder ?

Create a folder named Trailers in C:\Program Data\MediaBrowser\ImagesByName and then place your folder.jpg in there. Upon restarting Media Browser, your Trailers will now have an image.

Another small problem, my movie details no longer show video details as supplied by the mediainfo.dll
Is there any fox for this yet ? I like to be able to tell the difference between HD and SD movies.

In order to get MediaInfo working again you’ll need to install the MediaInfo plugin in the configuration program. I haven’t found a way to add a folder icon to the trailers yet either.

themagixboy has the right place to get to the details but took me a couple of goes at staring at the web site to find where the codes actually are.

If you slect Christchurch and then look at the web address it will have http://weather.yahoo.com/Christchurch-New-Zealand/NZXX0006/forecast.html with NZXX0006 being the code you need. One of the screen shots from the blog wouldn’t load for me so I am guessing it was showing that information.

Thank you for the help just found the hidden settings by pressing up.

Might give Diamond a miss for a while as it will not remember my folder settings, I set Tv series to show coverflow then within the series I use detail view/coverflow. If i set this in diamond it forgets once i back out of the folder and go back in.

@ AcesUnplugged

“Create a folder named Trailers in C:\Program Data\MediaBrowser\ImagesByName and then place your folder.jpg in there. Upon restarting Media Browser, your Trailers will now have an image.”

ImagesByName does not exist the only folder with images inthe title is ImageCache putting a trailer folder in here has no effect.
Does’nt really matter 2.1 has waaaay to many bugs for me to use, it refuses to remember my folder settings for random Tv shows and gives incorrect cover art for Lie To Me (shows images for Lie With Me ! ) I think I’ll stick with the old version as nice as all the new features are I’d be happier with a stable release of 2 before the rush for new features.

You’ll need to create the ImagesByName folder yourself.

Personally I use Meta Browser to get finer control over what metadata is picked up.

Mike,

Thanks for the overview on the MediaBrower update.

Question for you: in the case or your set up, it looks as though you have your blu-ray movies and standard dvd movies stored in two different folders on your hard drive. My set up is the same. I’d be curious to know, however, if there is a way to view one’s Blu-ray and Standard DVDs together in MediaBrower vs. separately without having to combined one’s blu-ray dvds and standard dvds in to one folder. For example, let’s say my low-tech parents were in town and want browse my movies and don’t care whether they are watching a blu-ray or standard dvd title. Further, they don’t want to be hassled by browsing separate folders to determine which movie they want to watch.

Do you happen to know if this is possible without putting having to store one’s standard dvd titles and blu-ray titles in the same folder?

What I would do in that situation is take advantage of Media Browser’s virtual folders setup. Create three main folders in MB labeled HD, DVD and All Movies. Place HD and DVD folders as you normally would then to All Movies add both folders.

To do this you add the first three options on the left, then when you get to All Movies add both folders on the right hand side of the config app (under the folder image area).

With the new initial view in Media Browser this would look especially nice I think. It would appear as if they were just options to browse the movie catalog.

Is there any issue with the actors images? I had it working fine in 2.0.11 (I think it was) by using the default directory “C:\Program Data\MediaBrowser\ImagesByName”

When I updated to 2.1 I no longer have the images. There wiki is still on the older version.

Yes, I believe there is a bug with the ImagesByName in this version as it’s not working for me either.

Installed, looks great but imagesbyname isnt working. This is a deal breaker for me so have rolled back until this is fixed.

Also the new home page is kind of boring… Is there any way to have custom backgrounds, change the font/appearance, have something else listed apart from recently added?

Otherwise looks good

Michael,

Thanks for the help. I had overlooked this nifty capability of MediaBrowser. On a related note, with regard to MB’s thumbnail preview add-in, has it been your experience that the thumbnail preview works for certain files and for other video flies it doesn’t. For example, I have a bunch of digitized family videos saved in avi and mpeg formats. In some cases, the thumbnail preview works for certain of these files, and in other cases it does not work certain of these files even though there is no difference file type/container. Have you experienced this, and if so, is there a fix?

Thanks,

Battles

Micheal,

After upgrading to MediaBrower 2.1, the applications that I had added to my custom MediaBrower strip which included Hulu, Playit, PowerDVD9, etc. no longer show up. Further, I can’t seem to add these applications back to the MediaBrowser strip using the registry hack you outline on the website. Also, since upgrading to win7 build 7201, my Sport’s strip no longer shows up. Do you happen to have any experience with these to bugs?

Thanks,

Battles

To add the custom strip items back into the Media Browser strip you’ll need to re-activate the original hacked Media Browser strip. Just running the included Add Media Browser strip registry should take care of it. The problem should be fixed in a future version of Media Browser, I hope.

As for the sports strip, I haven’t used any version beyond 7100 yet as I’m waiting until we get closer to RTM. I would try using the Mikinhosoft Start Strip program and see if you can use that to re-add it.

Media Browser on a RAM Drive??

I was wondering if there was a way to change the location of the files. Currently they’re in the C:\ProgramData\MediaBrowser directory and I want to move them to a RAM Drive to increase thumbnail/cache speeds. Is there a way this can be done? I find using the themes with a backdrop, browsing seems to be very slow and unresponsive.

There’s a new beta version slipped into the google code download page for MediaBrowser. Media Browser Beta 2.1.2.0 Phoenix (R1532).

I just did a fresh install of w7 and had to reget MB and saw this, so i’ve got it installed. Wow, the new detail view in Diamond theme is excellent, especially for tv shows. You can also add Music to your MB collection and the in app configuration has been expanded. Pretty big update.

I have win7 pro, RTM.
I installed MB using the registry hack in the MB wiki.
1st problem is that MB looks like crap, not at all like the great screenshots posted. I enabled Cover Browser and Diamond. I installed the plugins:
DVR-MS metadata
MediaInfo Provider

Last post got cutoff:
The problem is that there are no thumbs or posters linked to my recorded tv and movies. My recordings are in this format:
American Dad_KCPQDT_2009_10_18_22_30_02.wtv

Title/channel/date/time

Media Browser gets the metadata from the title, it doesnt read it from .wtv files apparently.

When I rename the files (cut off everything but the title) it will download metadata.

Is there any way to get media browser to extract the metadata from the .wtv files?
