Media Center Decoder Utility, an infinitely handy program for changing default decoders for Windows Media Center, has finally made the leap to support Windows 7. Formerly known as Vista Media Center Decoder Utility (VMCD) this simple little program allows you to change decoders with a few simple dropdown boxes. Support for Windows 7 includes renaming of Windows Media Foundation decoders to ensure they don’t get in the way of your selected decoders.
Of course, disabling the Windows Media Foundation codecs can carry inherent problems for anything other than a stand-alone Media Center setup. Upon starting MCDU in Windows 7 you’ll be advised of the potential for problems and special circumstances involved in changing decoders. Once you’ve come to terms with these potential issues and decided to press forward (because you can always go back) using MCDU is a snap.
Just select the decoders that you’d like to use in Windows 7 Media Center and hit “Set Defaults”. If on Windows 7 the “Take Ownership” checkbox will need to be selected to enable renaming the default decoders to disable them. This option will be checked by default on Windows 7 machines. Also, the utility should be run as administrator by default.
Yes, it really is that easy. Load up Media Center Decoder Utility, select the decoders and hit the button (maybe it should be a big red button?). Definitely beats doing it yourself, though perhaps future versions could avoid renaming WMF decoders by using registry fixes instead. Currently, the best bet for ensuring that your selected decoders work is still renaming them so this is no point against the program at this time.
