Hacking Windows 7 Media Center

Hack7MC Adds Support for Google Friend Connect Commenting

by Michael Healy @ 12:54 pm on April 20th, 2009 in site news with 4 Comments and Permalink

Hack7MC.com Hack7MC has added the ability for users to login to their Google Friend Connect account to post comments to the site! Members who have joined Hack7MC’s Friend Connect will now be able to have their GFC avatar and name displayed with their comments on the site. Frequent visitors and contributors are encouraged to join Hack7MC through Google Friend connect to enjoy these new features.

Best of all if you already use any of Google’s products such as gmail, you’ve already got a login for GFC! You can use the light blue bar at the top of the page to become a member of Hack7MC right away.

Also, in the future there will be even more features and areas of Hack7MC that will be providing services through Google Friend Connect’s login system. It’s been decided that users would prefer to use a universal login system in place of a proprietary login for Hack7MC. This will also make it easier in maintaining the site as GFC will be handling the member database and information.

For those who don’t accept our new Google overlords, you can still register for a Gravatar comment avatar with your e-mail address for use on Hack7MC (as well as many other Wordpress based sites).

Hopefully you enjoy this new feature and those to come from Hack7MC.com!

It took me some time to get it working properly. Then I made a few changes to the JavaScript to stop the need to reload when logging in. Using the plug-in from Google’s site had lots of issues.

I really think you need to cover Boxee for windows integration into Windows 7 MC. The high defenition streaming apple trailers are amazing and the hulu integration is great. Lots of online content in Boxee… check it out.

I can probably get you a download link to the windows alpha if you dont have an invite.

I gave it some coverage way back when I was first invited into the alpha around the same time Missing Remote came out with the integration hack: Adding Boxee to Media Center (x86 and x64) and Free Streaming TV: The Boxee Preview. The PlayIt plug-in makes for a very nice interface inside of Media Center as an alternative to Boxee.

Honestly, I haven’t really used Boxee since then though as I prefer to stay within the confines of the Media Center UI.
