Hacking Windows 7 Media Center

Enable Subtitles in FFDShow Video Codecs

logo Many Media Center enthusiasts choose to use FFDShow Video codecs to playback their videos in Windows Media Center. Often one setting that gets easily overlooked however is the subtitles setting. Enabling subtitles doesn’t mean that every time you pop in a movie you’re going to be forced to read the dialog for every single scene. What it does mean is that you’ll be getting the proper text when scenes in alternate languages come up.

This is one of those things that can be a little confusing for beginners (and even some old hats). We are all conditioned to think of subtitles as those forced captions for the hearing impaired delivered by TV broadcasts. In FFDShow Video, however, subtitles are often used during scenes which would normally be forced to display subtitles on your average DVD player (known as “forced subtitles”).

The Day The Earth Stood Still

For example, the Chinese dialog in the recently released “The Day The Earth Stood Still (2009)” will leave viewers scratching their heads throughout the rest of the movie without the proper subtitles. (Though you may well be doing that in any case as it wasn’t that great a movie..)

Enabling subtitles in FFDShow Video is no difficult affair. Simply open up the FFDShow Video Configuration and check the subtitles option in the left hand pane. For more advanced options select subtitles and have a look at the left hand options. There are plenty of settings which will allow you to adjust the placement and acceptable formats for subtitles.

Additional options that allow you to adjust the font and size of the captions displayed by FFDShow can be found under the “Font” submenu under Subtitles. Other than that there shouldn’t be much you need to do to enable subtitle support in FFDShow Video. Just sit back and enjoy!

Michael,

First let me say that your blog is AMAZING. Thanks so much for all the great tutorials, tips and tricks.

I was wondering if this also worked with extenders. I use Media Center almost exclusively through extenders. It would be nice if you could comment on Extender compatibility in your posts.

I’ve been meaning to put more emphasis on extenders though I don’t use my extender (an xbox 360) very often myself. I’ll see about doing some more serious work with it in the near future.

Sadly, many things like this just don’t work well with extenders… and subtitles are particularly frustrating! You basically have to reencode your video and burn in whatever subtitles you want.

after hours of work – I succeed to add subtitles on the xbox via tversity (with the k-lite codec pack and ffdshow) the problem is when i play the movie with subtitles – the movie is played with black bars around it (horizonally and vertically) and the subtitles are on the low part of the tv that i can’t see most of the second line of the subs.
anyone knows what I’m doing wrong?

If you’re using FFDShow for subtitles you can adjust the position under the Subtitles tab in the FFDShow Video Configuration

This would be PERFECT, if I didn’t get the “ÿ” in just about every subtitle line… please note this ONLY happens when playing dvd’s. Any ideas why this is happening? I’m debating whether I should let that annoy me or keep it as I really like how I can make my subs nice and bold (where some movie, the subtitles are hard to read and I don’t want to go back to those, haha). So here is what I am getting if you take the line from above: “ÿI was hoping I could reason with them.” (if the symbol doesn’t post when i hit “post”, it’s a Y with two dots across the top (ALT+0255). Any ideas why and how to eliminate the decrepid y?
