The popular website for downloading dvdid.xml files to add metadata to your Media Center Movie Library, DVDXml.com, has begun an API program. What does this mean for the average user? Simply put this means that we may soon see Media Center plug-ins to automate downloading of metadata files from DVDXml.com.
One of the most popular methods for getting accurate, complete metadata using Microsoft’s native meta data retrieval methods, DVDXml.com is currently somewhat cumbersome to utilize. Requiring users to register, search and download xml files for each title in their library can result in some long hours of searching and downloading for some users.
With the introduction of an API and the possibility that the process may soon be automated by industrious Media Center plug-in developers, things are certainly looking up. Unfortunately, once these plug-ins begin to emerge using them will require a one time fee of $20 to gain membership and the ability to utilize this new service from DVDXml.com.
Despite the fee this service could be well worth it considering the time involved in searching and downloading dvdid.xml files from the current site. On the other hand programs such as DVD Library Manager can make life slightly simpler for those not willing or able to spare the cash. At this point it seems we will have to wait and see what comes of this new offering from plug-in and program developers.
Until then, you can still use the basic functions of DVDXml.com free of charge simply by signing up for a free membership at the site. Be sure to stay tuned to Hack7MC to be informed when applications utilizing this new API begin to emerge.
