Hacking Windows 7 Media Center

Color Channel Logos for My Channel Logos

Color Channel Logos My Channel Logos is a great program that allows you to add channel logos to your TV guide listings in Windows 7 Media Center. Unfortunately, by default My Channel Logos only includes white/blue channel logos for use with the program. What if you want to add color logos to your TV guide listings? It’s possible to create and add them to your channel listings yourself.

These icons look especially good on Astroytoy7’s black theme who has also created a small pack of premade color channel icons which you can download from the Australian Media Center Community Forums. For even more pre-made icon sets visit the brand new Color Icon Download Page on Hack7MC too!

First you’ll need to get color versions of the channel logos for your channel lineup. A good resource for downloading channel logos can be found at iconharmony.com. To download logos select the 8xx option from the front page then select the checkbox next to each channel in your lineup. Once you’ve got your channels selected press the “Zip Icons” button to get a zip file containing your channel logos. You’re limited to 48 icons per zip file so you may need more than one zip to fit all of your icons from the site.

iconharmony.com

We’ll need to edit the logos slightly to create transparent backgrounds for them as well. You’ll need an image editing program such as paint.net to edit the images for use in Media Center. Extract the images to your hard drive and then, using paint.net, open each one. The black background will need to be removed on each logo.

Paint.net Transparent PNG Channel Logo

Use the magic wand tool to select the black area of each logo and hit delete. There should now be a grey and white background to the logo which indicates a transparent area. Now save the logo as a .png file, by default images downloaded from iconharmony.com are .jpg so you will need to change the file type when saving.

Now open Windows Explorer and navigate to the My Channel Logos directory in Program Files (or Program Files x86 on 64-bit machines). Inside the My Channel Logos folder should be another folder named “Logos”. This folder contains all the channel logos used in the TV guide. You will need to locate the logo you’re replacing and name the color logo with the same filename as the original My Channel Logos file.

If you have run My Channel Logos before, you can navigate to “\ProgramData\MyChannelLogos” instead to replace the existing channel logos. Otherwise, you’ll need to repopulate the logos using the My Channel Logos program.

My Channel Logos

Replace the original white logo with the new color logo and run My Chanel Logos to make sure the new color logo is being loaded correctly. Alternatively, you can also assign each color logo from inside My Channel Logos manually. That’s all there is to it! This will take some work to complete but for those looking for color channel logos it’s worth the effort.

Even better! Created a bunch of color channel icons for your area? Upload it to Hack7MC and share it with others on the Color Channel Logo download page.

What size do the logos have to be as I would like to use a different website? Thanks

Media Center will resize the images to fit the space but it’s probably best to use images under 100 x 50 so that you don’t get distorted or unrecognizable logos.

It looks like you may want to copy the logo to \ProgramData\MyChannelLogos instead. It looks like the Program Files directory is only used the first time (to cache the logos to the ProgramData folder).

Looks like you’re right you either have to replace the logos in ProgramData or rerun the program to repopulate the logos with different versions.

Just wondering but why doesnt somebody (maybe hack7mc) take the logos and make a package of the base channels (to save some people time/trouble) of editing our own logos and just make a package hosted here of the biggest channels.

I’ve updated the US cable icons package to include about 20 more color icons from iconharmony.com including three that I couldn’t locate in the default My Channel Logos: Nick HD, Nick JR and Comedy Central HD.

Great Work, Mike! Glad you’ve filled in the void of color logos. Given the large number of people who seem to want them, I will probably start encorporating color logos into the main program. But before I do, I’m trying to do some hacking of dll’s myself, to enhance the guide experience. This may change some of the logo specs, so don’t fell like you have to spend too much time on this… yet!

Thanks for the instructions above. I used the logos in the Harmony One section instead of the 8xx, there seems to be more of them (for UK anyways) and the quality is better (some gradient fills and shadows) Look great in media center, I never needed to change the size, just crop all the excess around the logo so media center displays it as big as possible.

A comment regarding MyChannelLogos program, if I use a listing from an unused channel and map it to another channel (I needed to use a non-HD channel listing for a HD channel that has no listings which is just a HD mirror) the non HD logo appears in both the HD and the non HD channel listing. Hope this makes sense ! The program seems to tie the logo with the listing and not the channel, is this the case ?

Yes, that’s correct, it uses the listing tied to the channel and not the channel name. The reason is probably because the channel names can differ, especially when dealing with local channels, and it was most likely the easiest method to get a reliable output from the program.

Inside the program you should be able to locate the channel and assign it the HD logo manually though.

Yes I tried that, if I change the HD channel logo it also changes the SD one too as they are listed as the same name. To have the logo correctly displayed I have to remove the listings from the HD channel.

Cheers.

ok so i’ve applied these logos to my W7 build 7600 x64 media center. The logos dont appear in the tv guide grid, it still says the channel name on the left, however as you scroll down the channels the synopsis at the bottom of the guide screen is now displaying the colour logos. I thought the guide grid was supposed to display the logos instead of the text? Am I missing something here, i’ve redone the process many times and end up with the same half baked result :(
