Hacking Windows 7 Media Center

Astrotoy7’s Black Theme for Media Center

Astrotoy7 We have covered the Black Theme by Astrotoy7 before but since then the theme has been refined and polished even further. Some of the glow effects have been removed, the “curtain” animation has been taken off the start menu and several other areas have been shored up. This theme definitely is a minimalist’s dream brought to the Media Center interface.

Black Start Menu

This theme really is quite nice for those looking for a sleek, basic look for their Media Center setup. The black gradients and backgrounds work especially nice while playing back movies or watching live TV. Just enough screen real estate is given up to draw when requesting interface objects so as to not completely obstruct view of the media.

Start Menu Overlay

The presentation is especially nice when paired with color channel logos in the TV guide listings.

To make things even easier, a patch file has been produced to install this latest version of the theme. Just download this zip file from Hack7MC.com and extract it to your “C:\Windows\ehome\” directory. If you haven’t already installed the “Take Ownership” registry fix you’ll need to double-click own.reg to install it. Then right-click “C:\Windows\ehome\ehres.dll” and select “Take Ownership”.

Once you’ve taken ownership of “ehres.dll” (if you have previously installed a Media Center theme ownership should already be set) right-click the patch file and select “Run as Administrator”. Start the patch once the window appears and wait for it to complete.

That should be it, just re-launch Windows 7 Media Center to make sure the new theme has been applied. This version of the theme should work on almost all builds of Windows 7 beta but full compatibility is not guaranteed. To roll-back to the previous ehres.dll locate “ehres Backup.dll” and rename to “ehres.dll”.

Enjoy your new sleek black Media Center interface! Be sure to stop by the Australian Media Center Community Forums and let Astrotoy7 know what you think as well.

Doesn’t work for me on 7077 x64 — I get an error message saying that ehres.dll is not found, despite the fact that I’ve right-clicked it and taken ownership.

Change the two input boxes to “C:\windows\ehome\ehres.dll” and then press start. Change the location if that isn’t the actual location of the file of course. That should solve the problem.

on 7077 i ended up going back to the old media center theme…. not that it was anything bad but I hated not having that opening animation and sound play (it wasnt there on the one i tried atleast)

I would like to see somebody modify even the existing theme to make it more transparent because thats the one thing I dont like about the current one is the lack of transparency.

any theme can be modded ;) To get transperencies in, you actually just need to change 3 overlay images for the start menu and one for the mini guide.

Still, the blue is so…. ugh.

Astro

ps-cheers for the mention Michael ;) 7100 RC version coming soon !!

Works fine for me on Windows 7 x64 RC1. It’s nothing but a collection of images and shouldn’t effect playback of any media.

I absolutely Love Astrotoy’s Black Theme. I have been using the default Black Theme built into MC7.

This new theme is Brilliant!!

Keep up the good work!

Hi Astrotoy,

I have used your theme with windows mce7 64 bit for a while.

I just did a clean install of win7 64 bit and now your black theme is not working.

I can find the download for the exe file, can you upload the old dll file as that worked ok.

Thanks.

This is a great theme and I’m using it on all my VMC and Win7 machines.

However whenever I implement this theme on VMC machines, I lose my Netflix entry point. I’ve tried adding it back in using Media Center Studio but it isn’t listed.

If I change back to the original VMC, the Netflix entry point shows back up.

Anyone know a workaround to keep the Netflix entry point visible.

BTW, Netflix entry point works fine on my Win 7 computers but not on VMC.

Thanks,
Brian
