Hacking Windows 7 Media Center

Changing Media Center Skip Intervals

IMG_4501 This tweak actually comes by way of MCEWorld. Sometimes you want the ability to tweak your skip interval settings, after all the average commercial break lasts about 2 minutes not 30 seconds. Maybe you’re obsessed with never overshooting your target and want to fine tune the length to something smaller. Perhaps you want the ability to rewind your half hour show to the beginning with just the touch of a button (probably a bad idea). Whatever the reason to tweak is fairly simple to employ.

First step is to open RegEdit, Window’s built-in registry editor, in administrator mode. To do this open your start menu and type “regedit” into the search box then press “ctrl+shift+enter.”

Once you’ve got the program open navigate to “HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Media Center\Settings\VideoSettings”.

To change the Skip Forward interval located the “SkipAheadInterval”. Double-click to open the dialog to modify the setting and select the “Decimal” option under “Base.” Change the value to whatever time you want.  The time is measured in milliseconds, default is 29000 or 29 seconds.

To change the Skip Backward interval locate the “InstantReplayInterval” and follow the same steps as above. The default for this setting is 7000 or 7 seconds.

Once you’ve finished setting the values to your desired amounts simply close the RegEdit program and restart your Media Center. That’s all there is to it!

By “restart your Media Center” do you mean to close the application and open it, or reboot the machine?

No this does not work with extenders. I tried with XBOX 360. One needs to change the registry settings for the XBOX 360 User account to have these take effect. Still trying to find the Windows 7 equivalent of the MCX1 ntuser.dat file. Find this and one can make the changes effective for extenders.

Folks, I have figured out how to apply this to an Xbox 360 Extender. Copying to the ntuser.dat file using the “Load Hive” method in the registry did not work for me using Windows 7.

Okay, so here’s how to get it working on Windows 7 with an Xbox 360 Extender.
1. Edit the registry entries as stated above for the user you are logged in as.
2. Create another administrator user.
3. You will be copying your users’s profile over to your default profile. Might have to reboot to be able to do the next steps.
4. Download “Windows Enabler 1.1″ (google it to download). You will need this to enable copying of profiles on Windows 7 because this feature is disabled for some reason.
5. Log in using this new administrator account.
6. Run the Windows Enabler program. You’ll get an icon in your taskbar for it (you can close this later when done).
7. open the User Profiles window (right-click Computer, go to properties, then Advanced System Settings , then the Advanced tab, then click Settings under User Profiles)
8. Make a backup of the Default profile in case things go south. Do this by select the Default profile. Click the Copy To button and Browse to “C:\users\defaultbackup”. Set permissions to “Everyone”. Click OK and agree to copy the profile.
10. Now select the user you originally ran the registry on
11. click once on the taskbar icon for Windows Enabler–it should show “ON” on the icon now.
12. you should now be able to click on the grayed out “Copy To” button and it will be usable now. Use the Copy to button to copy your original profile to the Default profile. Under the Browse option enter “C:\users\default” and for permissions make sure you set it to “Everyone”. Click OK and agree to copy the profile.
13. Delete all profiles called “Mcx#-WMC”. These are the profiles used by Windows Media Center Extenders.
14. Now re-setup your Xbox as an extender. Once the extender is setup again, it will recreate it’s profile using the new Default Profile you setup that has the proper registry entries for commercial skips.

This fix is a pain, but it works. I couldn’t find anything else out there that would change the registry entries for the extender profiles. This is the only way to do it. It’s a shame Windows 7 has this Copy To profile issue and requires this work around.

Hope this helps some people out.

Using registry editor you can mount a registry hive. Run regedit.exe (accept UAC warning if needed).
Click on HKEY_USERS.
Then go to your file menu and click “Load Hive”. Navigate to your c:\users\mcx1 (or mcx2, etc) folders. You won’t see the ntuser.dat file but type it’s name into the dialog box’s file name field and hit Enter.
It will ask for a key name – this is a temporary name (like a mount point). You can use “X”, mcx1, whatever really. You’re effectively, in layman’s terms, accessing HKEY_CURRENT_USER for that user. Navigate down to the appropriate bit of the registry, make your changes.
Once finished you need to go back to the mount point and then go to your file menu and select “Unload Hive”. Job done.
No need for tricky business with default profiles, etc :) (That enabler program looks neat though).
